When the Uniden engineering
team was designing the Unipro PC100, we put in a software
driver that automatically shuts down the unit within 1 minute
if an application button is pressed and the application is
not exercised. We thought that the appearance of the unit
being on and ready for use all the time without significant
battery drain penalty was a cute idea. Users would love that.
We were wrong on two counts. Firstly, from the responses we
received, even if the battery drain is not significantly affected,
psychologically, it gives that impression that the battery
power is consumed unnecessarily. Secondly, if the voice recorder
is activated, then the assumption on the power drain is wrong,
the battery life is noticeably shortened.
To overcome this buttons-pressed-in-briefcase
problem, we tested some of the third party leather wallet
cases. They work. The buttons are not pressed while in the
briefcases. An example of the wallet cases is shown here.
Interested readers can search for "leather wallet"
as the keyword on www.shopper.com
for the vendors
of these cases.
In addition, getting to start/settings/buttons/program
and highlighting button 1, one can disable the voice recorder
button by programming it to some innocuous button assignments
such as "Solitaire". Then, the problem of unknowingly
recording umpteen *.wav files and killing the batteries is
solved.
